New Year’s resolutions don’t work!

Did you know that you’re more likely to keep a resolution you make on your birthday than one you make on New Year’s? It’s true!

New Year’s resolutions have a terrible track record. Only 8% of people achieve their New Year’s resolutions! I don’t know about you, but I don’t find an 8% success rate very motivating. In fact, it’s the opposite!

It needs to be about YOU!

Ever find yourself getting roped in to someone else’s big plan? It’s a classic pitfall of the New Year’s resolution! Teamwork.

Normally, I’m all about teamwork and accountability buddies, but resolutions need to be personal. In order to get the results you want, you need to be fully invested in your resolution. That level of commitment isn’t possible if you’re only doing it to keep a friend company. It’ll fizzle out quickly.

Instead of jumping on a bandwagon at New Year’s, plan your resolutions around your birthday. We’re already in the habit of prioritizing ourselves on our birthdays. It’s a time of year when we are truly the center of our own universe. So let’s use that mindset to our advantage! It’s time for introspection!

Resolutions make great gifts!

Do you buy yourself birthday presents? I used to.

Nowadays, I opt to gift myself resolutions for my birthday. Here are some examples:

  • Veganism

  • Removing myself from a toxic relationship

  • Launching this website!

This doesn’t mean I never buy myself things on my birthday. Sometimes I do! But here’s the catch: they’re always part of a bigger resolution.

I’m so grateful that I decided to make those changes. So much so, that now I do it every year! I start planning my resolutions months in advance. It’s as exciting as a present!

So, start planning your birthday resolutions! Get creative!

  • Will you make a lifestyle change?

  • Will you pay down your debt?

  • Will you nurture a relationship?

Share your resolutions with me on IG or TikTok! Put them out there! Make them real!

Your big sister,

Mel
